How Does Hypnotherapy Work?

The human mind has two components – the Conscious Mind and the Sub-Conscious Mind.

The Conscious Mind is everything you are aware of – all your thoughts, self-awareness, likes and dislikes, and your memories. It is from this mind that you move about your day thinking, speaking and acting. The Conscious Mind is only 10% of your mind.

The Subconscious Mind is the other 90% of your mind. The Subconscious serves two purposes. First, it serves as an archive which stores everything you’ve ever experienced, whether you consciously recall the experiences or not. Think of it as a big library, where everything you’ve ever experienced is recorded and stored. Second, the Subconscious scans these recorded experiences looking for patterns, in order to “protect” you. When it finds experiences that are similar, it forms beliefs that then become programmed into your mind. For instance, a friend in high school betrayed your trust in some manner. Later, the person you were dating betrayed your trust. The Subconscious sees the similarities and forms a belief, “If I trust someone, they will hurt me.” From that point on, you find it difficult to open up to people and form close relationships. So, this belief limits you from developing close, meaningful relationships and you feel lonely and isolated.

Over the course of our lives, we have many experiences of disappointment, pain, possible or actual danger, rejection, betrayal, or lack and scarcity. As we accumulate these experiences, more and more limiting beliefs are formed. Our world becomes smaller and smaller. We don’t venture forth with the business idea we feel passionate about. We keep people at arm’s length. We feel anxiety in many situations. We worry more and more about things that haven’t happened (and are unlikely to happen). We find ourselves feeling empty and full of worry. We don’t pursue our dreams. We avoid anyone and anything that may cause anxiety. We self-medicate to numb our heavy emotions. We just don’t feel good about ourselves and life. We feel stuck.

Hypnotherapy unwinds these limiting beliefs in the Subconscious Mind, finding and clearing the source of these unwanted beliefs so that you are free of these patterns.

Your Hypnotherapy Session

In your personal session, you will tell the hypnotherapist the unwanted pattern you wish to release. You don’t need to remember or communicate details about your life experiences that may be painful to recall. You will tell the hypnotherapist your goals regarding clearing the unwanted pattern, and your hypnotherapist will discuss with you the hypnotherapy tool(s) that will be used to achieve your goals.

The hypnotherapist will then lead you gently into a state of relaxation, called hypnosis. This relaxed state is where the door to your Subconscious Mind is open, allowing the hypnotherapist to access the source of the unwanted pattern and clear it.

Hypnotherapy is completely safe. You are aware the entire time you are in this deeply relaxed state. It’s like a split-screen TV. Part of your awareness is in the hypnotic state where the healing work is being done, and part of your awareness is still in the present moment. You are aware of the barking dog outside or the noisy truck going down the street. You are aware of your body and your thoughts, and you are fully aware of the hypnotherapist’s voice and conscious of the hypnotherapy work being done. You have the ability to pop out of hypnosis any time you wish. Transforming an unwanted pattern may take one session, or several sessions. Your hypnotherapist will discuss this with you.
